It seems that there has always been a tendency for people to view worship as a form of entertainment. Several years ago I saw an article in a local newspaper about a denominational church which was adding “liturgical dance” to their worship service. Aside from the fact that there is no biblical authority for adding anything to our worship, there was one phrase in the article which I found especially troubling. The article said, “this enhancement of the worship experience”. I believe that viewing worship as an “experience” is at the heart of the problem. When we start to think that we are coming to our congregational worship services in order to “experience” or “get” something, we have forgotten that worship is something we “give” not something that we “get”. God is the audience, not us. Many have forgotten this. In many denominational churches today the emphasis is placed on their band or their choir or their special programs at holidays. They never mention having a reverential attitude in worshiping the one true God. Even among the Lord’s church this term “the worship experience” can sometimes be read in their bulletins. We need to be reminded what worship is all about. Sometimes you hear people complain that they didn’t “get anything out of” the worship service. Maybe the song leader was a little “off-key”, maybe the preacher’s sermon was boring, or maybe the men leading public prayer were less than eloquent. In reality, these things are not why people “don’t get anything out of worship”. It’s because they put nothing into it. We get something out of worship in direct proportion to what we put into it. If we come to the worship service with the proper attitude and the intention to actively worship God, we will be edified, we will be encouraged, and our faith will be strengthened. If we come to “experience” or “get” something, we will leave disappointed. I believe the current practice of encouraging “virtual worship” will only make this problem worse as time goes on. The problem is not a new one. In Ezekiel 33:30-32 we see, “As for you, son of man, the children of your people are talking about you beside the walls and in the doors of the houses; and they speak to one another, everyone saying to his brother, ‘Please come and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.’ So they come to you as people do, they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue their own gain. Indeed you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they do not do them. ” Let us remember what worship is all about.
