The Bible is our guide in every aspect of life. It can tell us what we are to do no matter who we are or what our position in life may be. If one wishes to know how to be a good father, for example, scripture can tell us. Fathers are to provide for the material needs of the family. In 1 Timothy 5:8 the apostle Paul writes, “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” Fathers are also to provide for the spiritual needs of the family. In Ephesians 6:4 Paul says, “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” And in Proverbs 22:6 we read, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Fathers are to provide discipline. In the book of Proverbs there are many references dealing with fathers providing discipline for their children. Proverbs 19:18 says, “Chasten your son while there is hope, And do not set your heart on his destruction.” Other quotes in Proverbs include 13:24; 22:15; and 23:13-14. And in Proverbs 29:6 we are told, “The rod and rebuke give wisdom, But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.” Fathers should lead by example. Even among animals the young learn how to act from their parents. If our children are going to be faithful Christians, they will likely learn how from their parents. Godly fathers can be such a blessing for any family. As was mentioned earlier, “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:4).
