Scripture tells us that the relationship we have with our fellow man is second only to the relationship we have with God. In Matthew 22:36-39 Jesus was asked, “which is the great commandment in the law?” His response was, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: you shall love your neighbor as yourself”. In Proverbs 6:19 we are told that one of the things that God hates is “one who sows discord among brethren”. We have a responsibility to be at peace with all men if possible (Romans 12:18). While it is true that, “it takes two to make peace but only one to make war”, the fact that some people don’t want to be at peace with us does not relieve us of our responsibilities. We must always, “pursue peace with all people” (Hebrews 12:14) as long as in doing so we don’t compromise God’s truth. The Apostle Paul says that one of the ways in which we can pursue peace with all men is to be helpful to those who are our enemies. “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good”. (Romans 12:20-21).
