Many of us like to sing song number 473 in our song book, “O how I love Jesus”. We like to think of the love that God has for us and we like to think that we respond to that love by returning it. But do we really love Jesus? In John 14:15 Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” And in verses 23 and 24 Jesus says “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.” Jesus equates our love for Him with obedience to His word. As John wrote in 1 John 5:3, “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments.” Many people today claim to love Jesus but their works show that they really don’t. If they truly loved Jesus they would do their best to learn what He wants from them and they would give their best efforts to do His will. Loving God also includes loving our fellow man. 1 John 4:20 tells us, “If someone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?” Actions speak much louder than words. Do you really love Jesus? You can tell by your actions. Are you trying your best to do His will?
