Law enforcement agencies tell us that “distracted” driving is at least as dangerous as drunk driving. People are guilty of “distracted driving” when they let something distract their attention from the road and the important task of controlling their vehicle. The distraction can be a cell phone, a text message, another passenger in the vehicle, or one of several other things. While “distracted driving” is a serious situation and one that may have far reaching consequences, there is something even worse, spiritual “distracted driving”. Many of us would never dream of texting or talking on a cell phone while driving, but we may allow the things associated with our everyday lives to distract us from our spiritual path. In Luke 8:14 Jesus says that some may be, “choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life”. In other words, they have let the things of life, whether good or bad, distract them from the more important issue of bearing spiritual fruit. This is a situation in which any of us might easily find ourselves. While we might choose to put away the cell phone or other distractions while driving, we cannot eliminate the distractions of this world. It is necessary for us to put worldly distraction in proper perspective. Some might argue that they would never allow themselves to be guilty of spiritual “distracted driving”. If we are tempted to make a claim like this, we should remember what the apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 10:12, “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall”. It is only through constant attention that we may avoid spiritual “distracted driving”. In Hebrews 2:1 we find our best defense against spiritual “distracted driving”, “Therefore, we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.” If we will dedicate ourselves to study and meditation on God’s word, then we will be able to keep ourselves driving properly down the strait and narrow road to heaven.
