Many times in the New Testament we find a comparison and contrast of worldly wisdom and spiritual wisdom. In 1 Corinthians 1:21 the apostle Paul says, “...the world through wisdom did not know God”. His point is that earthly knowledge, while useful in many areas of life, cannot lead us to God. Earthly wisdom considers many of the things that scripture tells us to be “foolish” (1 Corinthians 1:18; 2:14) or impractical if not downright impossible. In Ephesians 5:17 Paul tells us what the essence of spiritual wisdom is. He says, “Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” True spiritual wisdom consists of understanding what God requires of us and doing it to the best of our ability. This is something which must be done constantly. In verse 15 of Ephesians chapter five Paul says, “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise”. The term “walk” as used here means to live your life this way as a habit. So as a matter of habit we should live always striving to know what the will of God is and to do that will. This requires that we study God’s revealed word. 2 Timothy 2:15 instructs us to “be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (NKJV). It is only through God’s revelation to man that we can become truly “wise” in the only way that really matters.
