In Hebrews 11:6 we are told that without faith it is impossible to please God, so faith is a necessary characteristic of the Christian. Many people believe that faith is a subjective belief, in other words you choose to believe something without, or even contrary to, the evidence. This is not the faith of the New Testament. In Romans 10:17 the apostle Paul writes, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” So faith is produced by hearing, reading, and studying the written word of God. If we cannot please God without faith and we cannot build faith without a knowledge of God’s word, we see that without a knowledge of God’s word we cannot please God. And this is not just a superficial knowledge. We must always continue to read and study the bible thus building more faith. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Paul wrote, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” Without a knowledge of God’s word we cannot please God and cannot know the things that God requires of us as we live out our lives on this earth. We cannot get to heaven.
