The things that are most important in our lives are the things we are most willing to make sacrifices for. We are quite willing to put aside our own desires in order to benefit our families. We will sacrifice our time, effort, and money to make sure that our children and spouse are provided for. If we have a hobby that we enjoy we will happily spend our time, money, and effort in pursuit of that hobby even when it doesn’t make much sense to the people around us. Whether it is home or family, job or hobby, or something else, if it is important to us, no sacrifice of time, money or effort seems too great.

But what about God?

In Matthew 10:37 Jesus said, “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.” When asked which was the greatest commandment in the law of Moses, Jesus responded, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment” (Matthew 22:37-38). God requires that He, and doing His will, be the most important thing in the world to us. While many may claim to love God supremely, actions speak louder than words. Are we willing to make sacrifices for God and to do His will? Are we willing and happy to spend whatever it takes in time, effort, or money to do God’s will in every area of life? In John 14:15 Jesus said, “if you love Me, keep My commandments”. Our willingness to make sacrifices for God and striving to do His will, show how important God is in our lives.
