In 2 Corinthians 2:11 the apostle Paul says, “lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.” Unfortunately, many people today are completely ignorant of Satan’s devices. They give no thought at all to the ways that Satan may use to deceive them and lead them into sin. There are a lot of people who don’t believe that the devil exists at all, and if they think he does exist they picture him as a comical figure with horns and a pitchfork, not something to fear. The apostle Paul certainly saw Satan as someone to fear. In 2 Corinthians 11:3 he said, “But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.” Peter also saw the devil as someone to fear in 1 Peter 5:8 when he cautions, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” Satan is dangerous. We see the core of his nature in John 8:44 where Jesus said, “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” Satan lied to Eve in Genesis chapter 3 and she believed his lie and man was cast out of the garden of Eden. He lied to Jesus in Matthew chapter 4 and Jesus countered his lies with scripture. In Ephesians 6:11 we are told to “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Without our spiritual armor we are defenseless against the wiles of Satan whether he uses “...the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life” (1 John 2:16) as he did with Eve or sends the false teachers we are warned about in 2 Corinthians 11:13-15, “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.” We must never lose sight of the fact that Satan is real, he is dangerous, and wants nothing more than to drag us to hell with him. We must always be on our guard against him and “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7).
