Sadly, many people don’t give much thought to worship these days. In many religious groups, worship is just entertainment, something performed by the band or the choir. Even in some congregations of the Lord’s church focus is more on the “praise teams” or on how complex and pretty the singing is. People act like they are the audience rather than active worshipers. In Psalms 29:2 we read, “Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” Psalms 89:7 says, “God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, And to be held in reverence by all those around Him.” When we offer worship to God we must remember that we are the worshipers and God is the audience; we must come before Him with the sense of awe, with the reverence and respect that He is due. We must also remember that God is the one who makes the rules, He decides what we are to do in worship as well as when, where, and how it is to be done. We do not have the right to make changes to that which God has authorized. In Leviticus 10:1-3 Nadab and Abihu were killed by God for doing what God had not authorized, “Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them.” (vs 1). God told Moses, “By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified.” (vs 3). Nadab and Abihu, by choosing to make an unauthorized change to worship, were not regarding God as holy. In Ecclesiastes 5:1 Solomon said, “Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil.” In John 4:24 Jesus said, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” We must worship in the correct way and for the correct reason. In 1 Corinthians 14:15 the apostle Paul wrote, “What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.” Whether it is preaching or praying or singing or giving or taking the Lord’s Supper, it should be reverent in attitude, understandable, and in accordance with biblical teaching. In 1 Corinthians 2:4-5 Paul said, “And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.” In 1 Peter 4:7 Peter said, “...be serious and watchful in your prayers.” In Ephesians 5:19 we are told that in our singing we are “speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” In 1 Corinthians 11:29 we see that if one does not understand the purpose of the Lord’s Supper we “eat and drink judgment” to ourselves. Worship is serious business and we need to always remember that.
