Everyone does things from time to time that they feel guilty about. When we feel sorry about something we have done, it is important that our sorrow is the right kind. In 2 Corinthians 7:10 the apostle Paul says, “For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.” If our sorrow is a godly sorrow, it will lead to repentance. Repentance is a change of mind, we change the way we think about things. The sorrow of the world will make us sad that we got caught or that someone got hurt by our actions, but we don’t really change the way we think about our actions. If we thought that we could do the same thing again with a guarantee that we would not be caught, we would do it. Godly sorrow makes us realize that what we have done is a sin in the eyes of God and whether or not we would be caught next time doesn’t matter. We will try not to do such things again because it is wrong. In Matthew 26:34-35 Jesus tells Peter, ‘“Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.’ Peter said to Him, ‘Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!’” In verse 75 when Peter has denied the Lord three times, “And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, ‘Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.’ So he went out and wept bitterly.” In Matthew 27 Judas, who had agreed to betray Jesus for 30 pieces of silver, returns to the chief priests and “seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, ‘I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.’ And they said, ‘What is that to us? You see to it!’ Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself.” (vs 3-5). Peter and Judas both did something wrong, both were sorry for what they had done. Peter’s godly sorrow led to repentance. Judas’ worldly sorrow led to his death. We all do things we are sorry for, we need to be sorry in the right way.
