In Ezekiel 33:30-32 God tells the prophet, “As for you, son of man, the children of your people are talking about you beside the walls and in the doors of the houses; and they speak to one another, everyone saying to his brother, ‘Please come and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.’ So they come to you as people do, they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue their own gain. Indeed you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they do not do them.” This is a very accurate description of how many people approach religion in our day and time. They want to feel religious but they don’t really want to make the changes in their lives that are necessary. The current move toward the big community “mega” churches is a symptom of this attitude that people have. They want to attend a church where they can network socially, have a seat at the coffee bar and talk with their friends, before they go in to listen to the band and the choir and hear a message from their gifted speaker that is designed to send them home feeling good about themselves. They enjoy the living nativity scene at Christmas and the fireworks and laser light show on the fourth of July. They hear about how much God loves them and how He wants them to be happy. No one wants to hear that there are things that God requires of us. People need to understand that if we insist that we only hear what we want to hear, it will not end well for us. “Now go, write it before them And note it on a scroll, That it may be for time to come, Forever and ever: That this is a rebellious people, Lying children, Children who will not hear the law of the Lord; Who say to the seers, ‘Do not see,’ And to the prophets, ‘Do not prophesy to us right things; Speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits. Get out of the way, Turn aside from the path, Cause the Holy One of Israel To cease from before us.’” (Isaiah 30:8-11). No one likes to be corrected, no one likes to be told that they are wrong, but if we refuse to hear what we need to hear, it will not go well for us. “But they refused to heed, shrugged their shoulders, and stopped their ears so that they could not hear. Yes, they made their hearts like flint, refusing to hear the law and the words which the Lord of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets. Thus great wrath came from the Lord of hosts.” (Zechariah 7:11-12).
