Proverbs 4:26-27 tells us, “Ponder the path of your feet, And let all your ways be established. Do not turn to the right or the left; Remove your foot from evil.” It is a good idea to stop from time to time and look around to see where we are, spiritually speaking. What path are we on, are we traveling in the right direction, are we making positive progress? It is necessary for us to do this partly because it is so easy for us to end up on the wrong path without realizing it. In Matthew 7:13-14 Jesus said, “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” We need to “ponder” our path to make sure that we are on the right one. Even if we are on the right path, we need to make sure that we are not being distracted along the way to the point that we make no progress. In Mark 4:18-19 Jesus says, “Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.” In 1 Peter 2:25 the apostle Peter says of his readers, “For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” Like Peter’s readers, if we would be on the proper path we need to follow the Shepherd and Overseer of our souls, Jesus our Lord. In the 23rd Psalm in verse three we are told, “He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.” Unfortunately, there are many who want to go their own way, follow their own path. “Do not enter the path of the wicked, And do not walk in the way of evil. Avoid it, do not travel on it; Turn away from it and pass on. For they do not sleep unless they have done evil; And their sleep is taken away unless they make someone fall. For they eat the bread of wickedness, And drink the wine of violence.” (Proverbs 4:14-17). We need to ponder the path of our feet, examine ourselves in the light of God’s word to make sure that we are on the right path, going in the right direction, and making positive progress undistracted by the things of this world. “All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth, To such as keep His covenant and His testimonies.” (Psalms 25:10).
