Storms can be frightening things. Sometimes they strike with little, if any, warning. They can be powerful and dangerous, even deadly. One of the most frightening things about storms is that there is very little we can do about them. We can’t eliminate them or lessen their severity. All we can do is make what preparations we can to make ourselves and our loved ones as safe as we can when the storm strikes. Sometimes in scripture the storm is used as an illustration of the troubles and trials of life. Storms of life are also inevitable, they cannot be avoided. It is absolutely essential that we take any steps necessary to safeguard ourselves. In Proverbs 1:27-28 speaking of those who refuse to hear God’s word, we read, “When your terror comes like a storm, And your destruction comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you. Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me.” These people didn’t take steps to protect themselves from the storms of life. In Matthew 7:24-27 Jesus tells us what we must do. “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” If we will not just hear God’s word but obey it then the storms of life cannot make us fall, we are anchored on the rock. If we are not obedient to God’s word we have no protection from the storm. Take a lesson from Peter. In Matthew 14:22-33 as Peter is walking on the water to go to Jesus, “he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!’” Jesus could have stilled the storm before Peter stepped out of the boat, but He did not. Peter needed to learn a lesson. Storms of life will come but when they do we should keep our eyes on the Lord and trust Him to save us.
